Preview not working on OSX

followed instructions to install on OSX 10.13. First, received the error
cp: .../Halide/bin/libHalide.so: no such file or directory

after changing the Makefile:
bin/libHalide.so: mkdir -p bin cp $(HALIDE_PATH)/bin/libHalide.so bin
to
bin/libHalide.$(LIB_EXT): mkdir -p bin cp $(HALIDE_PATH)/bin/libHalide.$(LIB_EXT) bin

the extension seems to copy the file correctly once the path is set via the configure button. The preview then shows no error, but also does not show any output of the selected example file.

I had to make a couple of extra changes for it to work.
