Summary

This PR answers one question: can Antenna run automated tracking at all? An admin can pick sessions (or a capture set) in the Django admin, open the same intermediate form used for class masking and the small size filter, adjust the tracking settings, and start a post-processing job. The job links each detection to the matching detection in the next capture, merges the occurrences those links join into one occurrence within the session, and records what it did as an algorithm result on each occurrence it changed. The occurrence's history then shows a tracking card: how many detections were joined, how much the insect moved, how much its box changed size, whether the labels agree, which occurrences were merged in, and the settings and job of the run.

Every setting that decides whether two detections are linked is editable on the form and saved on the job, so runs can be compared. The defaults are a plain baseline and only a starting point; choosing recommended settings is the next step (#1468). Because a run cannot be undone inside Antenna yet (#1477), a "Preview only" setting reports what a run would change without writing anything, and every result records the grouping from before the run so a reset can restore it.

This PR is stacked on #1461 (algorithm results and the occurrence history) and supersedes the "run" part of #1272. Occurrence editing, confirmation, the review UI, vector-based matching and a dedicated export stay out (listed below).

List of Changes

Change (effect) How Notes
Admins can run tracking on selected sessions or capture sets from the Django admin, with a settings form tracking post-processing task; run_tracking action on the Events and Source image collections admin pages The Events action creates one job per project. A capture set selects the sessions it touches; all processed captures of those sessions are tracked
Every cost setting is editable, and the form cannot drift from the task Settings are fields of the task's pydantic schema; a generic helper builds the admin form fields (label, help text, default, bounds) from the schema Class masking and size filter forms are unchanged
Settings: cost cutoff, three term weights (overlap, size, distance), optional limits on overlap, size ratio and distance, and an optional maximum time between captures Pairs failing an enabled limit are never candidates; captures further apart than the time limit are not compared Defaults: 2 × (1 − overlap) + (1 − size ratio) + distance at cutoff 1.0, no limits, chosen by simulation (see "Default settings" below). Help text says they suit captures about 20 seconds apart
An admin can see what a run would do before running it "Preview only" setting: the run matches and plans as usual, then reports links, merges and occurrence counts before and after on the job, and writes nothing
Detections from two detectors are never chained together "Detector" setting limits a run to one detection algorithm; without it, a session with detections from more than one detector is skipped with a reason Two detectors find the same insect twice, and their boxes would form parallel chains
Detections in neighbouring captures are linked, and the occurrences they join are merged Detection.next_detection; greedy lowest-cost one-to-one matching per pair of captures; the merge plan is worked out in memory (chains.py) and merges whole occurrences into the first one in capture order A run only adds: it never takes a detection out of its occurrence, and never replaces or removes a link. A merge never crosses a session boundary
Sampled sessions can be tracked Captures are ordered over processed captures only, so an unprocessed capture between two processed ones does not prevent comparing them Captures without a timestamp are left out
A busy session is written quickly, so other writers wait less Each table is written in a few bulk statements: one UPDATE … FROM unnest(…) each for links and occurrences, one insert, one delete, and a determination recompute per changed occurrence Measured below: 38.1 s to 11.6 s of transaction on the busiest session of a production copy
Each changed occurrence gets a record of the run, with statistics people can sort by later, and the grouping it replaced A tracking algorithm result per linked occurrence (see the table below); its sortable value is the movement per step Statistics are a snapshot of the run, not columns on Occurrence. Each run adds its own result
The occurrence history shows what tracking did A tracking card in the history timeline Screenshot below
Every merge keeps the rows that point at the merged occurrences One operation, merge_occurrences({absorbed id: kept id}) in ami/main/models_future/occurrence_merges.py, moves detections, identifications and algorithm results to the kept occurrence, deletes the absorbed ones and returns what it moved. Each link to an occurrence has a rule in MERGE_RULES, and a test fails when a new link has none. It refuses, writing nothing, merges across projects or sessions, chains and missing ids, and runs a fixed number of statements however many occurrences merge Replaces AlgorithmResult.objects.move_to_occurrence, which left #1461; a later manual merge can call it unchanged
Human identifications and earlier results survive merges Through that operation, identifications and algorithm results move onto the kept occurrence before the merged ones are deleted; a user who identified two merged occurrences keeps only the newest identification active, as saving an identification does Sessions with human identifications are tracked by default; the option to skip them stays, unchecked
Tracking keeps what people identified When occurrences merge, the one kept is the first identified one, so its id survives. A link that would join two occurrences whose identifications name different taxa is not made (nor followed, if stored earlier), so no one's identification is withdrawn by a merge; the job reports how many links were refused this way An occurrence two people disagree on is not joined to one naming only one of their taxa
An identification made during a run cannot be lost The write locks the session's occurrences first, then checks under that lock that the session's detections, links and identifications are the ones it planned from An identification saved on an occurrence the run merges away waits for the run, then fails (see Known limitations)
Tracking never casts a species vote of its own The determination is recomputed from the existing classifications after a merge; the result records it before and after Later class masking still works on merged occurrences (tested)
Recomputing a determination does fewer than half the lookups update_occurrence_determination cleared its cached properties with hasattr(), which computes them first; it now drops them directly Shared code; pipeline result saving benefits too
Long sessions do not get the job reaped, and the job row is not held locked Each session is matched outside any transaction, saving progress every few comparisons or seconds; links and merges are then written in one transaction that re-checks the guards and skips the session if it changed meanwhile
One failing session does not lose the others Each session is tracked on its own; a failure is logged and counted, the other sessions continue and their counts are refreshed, and the job is marked failed at the end
Already-tracked sessions are left alone by default "Only track sessions that have not been tracked" guard: a session is tracked when any of its detections has a link Sessions grouped some other way without links are tracked. Turned off, a run adds links between detections that have none and merges what they join
A retried job keeps one tracking result per occurrence A retry that adds links to an occurrence it already recorded folds the new figures into that result, keeping the grouping from before the first attempt and the merges and identifications of both. When the retry merges in an occurrence that holds its own result from the same job, that result is folded in too and then deleted, and the kept result's last-updated time is set A retry that finds nothing new writes nothing
An occurrence's history shows one card per run, however many occurrences were merged into it Merges carry the absorbed occurrences' results along, so the history groups results of one job, kind and algorithm into one entry with every classification they created and a count of the results; the figures and determination of any single result are left off, since they may describe an absorbed occurrence One merged occurrence in a test copy showed 71 near-identical class masking cards from one run
A tracking card names the occurrence's own session, linked The config's sessions are declared as session references (#1461), and the card keeps only the occurrence's session from the job's list A job can cover dozens of sessions
Regrouping sessions never leaves a tracked occurrence spanning two sessions A regroup that draws a session boundary through an occurrence splits it into one occurrence per session and copies its identifications to each piece, under the sessions' locks Skipped after one indexed query when the touched sessions have no tracking links, so regroups elsewhere cost nothing extra
Session and station counts stay correct after merges After the run, the cached counts of each tracked session and of its station are refreshed within the job
Adding the link column does not block the detection table Column added as metadata only; the unique index is built concurrently, then the foreign key is added unvalidated and validated separately; the brief strong locks give up after 10 s See Deployment Notes
The pure matching, merge-plan and statistics code is kept apart from the job ami/ml/post_processing/tracking/: config.py, matching.py, chains.py and stats.py contain no Django code and their tests need no database; task.py holds the job; sessions.py the session lock and regroup split Importing them still loads Django through the package, so an offline script runs them inside the Django environment

What a tracking result records

Field Meaning
motion (also the result's sortable value) Average distance between consecutive detection centres, as a share of the image diagonal
path_length Total distance between consecutive detection centres, same units
size_change Largest box area divided by the smallest (1 = no change)
distinct_taxa Distinct taxa among the detections' labels at the time of the run. Each detection counts once, with its best classification chosen as the determination chooses (terminal first, then the highest score), so the figure describes what the determination was made from
label_agreement Share of detections whose label names the determination after the run; human identifications are not counted
taxa Each of those distinct taxa, most detections first: its id, a copy of its name as it was at the time of the run (so the record still reads after a rename or a synonym merge), how many detections it labels, and the mean and best score of those labels. The history card lists them in place of the bare count
duration_seconds Time from the occurrence's first capture to its last
score_min / score_mean / score_max Lowest, mean and highest score of the detections' labels
detection_count Detections in the occurrence
link_costs One entry per detection in detection_ids: the matching cost of the link this run made from it, or null when its link is older, was refused, or it is the last, to see why detections were joined
merged_occurrence_ids Occurrences folded into this one by the run
determination_before_id / determination_after_id The determination before and after the run
detection_ids / previous_occurrence_ids The occurrence's detections in capture order, and the occurrence each was in before the run
moved_identifications / withdrawn_identification_ids Identifications moved onto this occurrence, with the occurrence each came from, and those withdrawn as duplicates

Detailed Description

Matching

For each pair of neighbouring processed captures in a session, every pair of valid detections gets a cost:

cost = overlap_weight * (1 - IoU) + size_weight * (1 - smaller area / larger area) + distance_weight * (centre distance / image diagonal)

A pair is a candidate when it passes every enabled limit and its cost is below the cutoff. Candidates are taken lowest cost first, and each detection is linked at most once in each direction; a detection that already links on, or is already linked to, is not a candidate. A capture without recorded dimensions is not compared with the next one. Each run ends with a one-line "Result" on the job saying how many sessions were tracked, previewed, skipped or failed. A session whose processed captures have no detections (from the chosen detector, when one is chosen) is skipped with that reason rather than counted as tracked.

Default settings (measured by simulation)

The recommended setting from the tuning work uses embedding vectors to keep apart two insects when one leaves and another lands on almost the same spot. Many projects have no vectors, so this PR's default reaches a similar result from geometry alone: the overlap weight is 2, the other weights 1 and the cost cutoff 1.0, so only overlapping boxes can link. These figures come from a simulation that runs this branch's own matching code over six sessions with confirmed occurrences, captured about 20 seconds apart. The simulation reproduces the recommended setting's real runs exactly.

Setting Link recall on confirmed occurrences Known wrong joins still made (of 10, then of 6 found later) Occurrences left on three full nights (quiet / medium / busy)
Recommended, with vectors 0.917 0 / 2 340 / 7,084 / 28,270
Previous default (all weights 1) 0.960 10 / 6 327 / 6,485 / 26,016
This default (overlap weight 2) 0.927 0 / 2 364 / 7,087 / 28,366

Link precision on the confirmed occurrences was 1.000 for every setting tested, so it cannot show wrong joins; the known joins come from earlier by-eye audits by one reviewer, and the setting was chosen on those same joins. The links this default makes that the recommended setting does not have not been reviewed by eye yet. Activity scaling and a species penalty, which the recommended setting also uses, were measured without vectors and left out: the first barely changed the result, and the second blocked none of the known joins. Projects that capture minutes apart are untested.

Write phase on the busiest session (measured)

Measured on the busiest session in a copy of production data (14,366 detections over 663 captures), with its real boxes, capture times and grouping loaded into a test database whose detection and occurrence tables were padded to the copy's size (about 630,000 and 610,000 rows). Default settings; the run makes 10,777 links and takes the session from 13,930 to 3,589 occurrences.

Before this round After
Write phase 37.3 s 10.5 s
Transaction (locks held) 38.1 s 11.6 s
Statements in the write phase more than 9,000 (Django's query log stopped counting) about 6,050

Nearly all remaining statements are the determination recompute, two lookups per changed occurrence (1,976 here). This was a single measurement on a developer machine, not a controlled benchmark. The new freshness guard and the regroup gate both use the new unique index: under 0.02 ms with no links in the table, about 5 ms with this session's links, where the old guard took a 204 ms sequential scan of the copy's detection table.

Decisions made in review (owner, 5 Oct)

  • No tracking classification. An earlier version wrote a copy of the winning classification when a merge changed the determination. The original stayed final, so the copy was an extra vote that class masking could not remove. Tracking now only groups detections; the determination comes from the classifications as before, and the result records the change.
  • Statistics live in the result snapshot. Sorting by movement uses the result's indexed value. Sorting by label disagreement, or slower statistics, will be measured on a large project when the sorting UI is built, and may live on an opt-in explore page.
  • No dedicated export. The detections export in Feat: detections csv export #1395 is the natural place for each detection's link and occurrence.

Deferred, and where it lives

Temporary shapes and what replaces them

These are deliberate stopgaps, matching the plan in this comment on #1412.

Shape Why it is temporary Replaced by
A tracking result stores its link costs as one list per occurrence, aligned with detection_ids The cost belongs to a link between two detections, not to the occurrence One result per detection once algorithm results can belong to detections (#1457); the alignment lets a data migration rewrite the existing rows
The history shows one entry per run for results that merges brought onto an occurrence, with a count and the run's classifications but no per-result figures Class masking and the size filter record one result per occurrence, so merged occurrences accumulate them Results on detections (#1457), after which an occurrence's results describe its own detections
The tracking card picks the occurrence's session out of the job's list of sessions The job, not the result, records the sessions Unchanged unless results record their own scope

Known limitations

  • The defaults are not calibrated. In the busiest session of the production copy, processed captures are 60 s apart (at most 120 s; the independent review found up to 600 s in another session), while the help text describes captures about 20 s apart, and the time limit is off by default. At the defaults, the busiest session goes from 13,930 occurrences to 3,589. Use "Preview only" before a real run until Calibrate tracking's default settings from experiments on real nights #1468 settles the defaults.
  • A run cannot be undone inside Antenna yet. Each result records what a reset (Reset tracking on a session so runs with different settings can be compared #1477) needs, but nothing reads it so far. Results that move from a merged occurrence onto the kept one are not recorded.
  • Re-running tracking on a session only adds links and merges. It does not split occurrences an earlier run merged.
  • An identification saved during a run on an occurrence the run merges away waits for the run to commit (10.7 s in the measurement above) and then fails because the occurrence no longer exists. Before, it was saved and then moved; now it is never lost silently, but the person gets an error and saves it again on the merged occurrence.
  • The freshness guard reads the linked detections of the whole table when a session has none, so its cost grows with how much has been tracked across all projects (about 5 ms for 10,777 links).
  • After a regroup splits an occurrence, its tracking result stays on the earliest piece with the figures of the whole run.

How to Test the Changes

Automated: after merging main (with #1461 squash-merged), the full backend suite passes in a CI-like compose stack (974 tests, 2 skipped), makemigrations --check reports no changes, and UI lint, type check and the history tests pass. New tests cover the settings schema, the cost function and each limit, the time limit (without a database), the merge plan (without a database), processed-only ordering and captures without a timestamp, chains stopping at session boundaries, whole-occurrence merges, identifications and results moving on merge with duplicates withdrawn, the grouping recorded for a reset, the result figures, class masking after tracking, both guards (including a session grouped earlier without links), the preview, one detector per session, progress saved between comparisons within a session, a failing session, a session without detections, a retry that merges occurrences each holding a result of the job, the capture-set scope, the regroup split and its gate, query counts that grow with captures and occurrences but not with detections, and the admin form.

Manual, on a demo project (create_demo_project):

  1. Reset one session so each detection has its own occurrence, and give one detection a high-scoring classification of a different species.
  2. Django admin → Events → select the session → "Run Occurrence tracking on the selected sessions (async)". Set the maximum time between captures to 3600 seconds.
  3. The job succeeded and recorded a result for each linked occurrence. One occurrence's determination changed from one species to another, recorded in its result, with no tracking classification written. The occurrence history shows the card below, with each setting labelled by its title from the settings form.

The manual run predates this review round; the benchmark above ran the new write phase.

End to end after the merge operation (8 Oct), on a local copy of a real night of captures with this branch's server and worker: the admin form ran tracking on one session of 421 occurrences with the human-identification guard off and one detector chosen. The job succeeded, 341 occurrences were folded into their keepers (421 → 80, all 341 deleted), all 4 identifications moved with none left without an occurrence and no user holding two active ones, the 299 earlier results on the session were all kept, and 34 tracking results were written; the history API and the card showed the new figures. A first attempt without a detector chosen was skipped as designed, because the session has detections from two detectors.

Deployment Notes

  • Migrations: main/0100_detection_next_detection adds a nullable column (metadata only). main/0101_detection_next_detection_constraints is non-atomic: it builds the unique index concurrently, attaches it as the unique constraint, adds the foreign key as NOT VALID, then validates it. Reads and writes on the detection table continue during the index build and the validation; adding the column, attaching the unique constraint and adding the unvalidated foreign key each take a brief strong lock, and give up after 10 s rather than queue behind a long query. If the concurrent index build is interrupted, or a lock times out after it, the index of the same name must be dropped before the migration is retried.
  • Migration numbers follow New home for algorithm results that are not species classifications #1461 (main/0098, main/0099). If another PR takes main/0100 first, these are renumbered.
  • No backfill. Tracking runs only when an admin starts it. The regroup split runs during every regroup, but returns after one indexed query unless the sessions have tracking links.

Claude says: #1471 merges first, then #1461, so two things to plan for when rebasing this PR.

Migrations. #1471 takes main/0096 and main/0097, and #1461 will follow them, so this PR's 0096_detection_next_detection and 0097_occurrence_track_stats need renumbering after both.

next_detection locks main_detection while its index builds. OneToOneField adds a unique index, and Django builds it in the same transaction as the ALTER TABLE ... ADD COLUMN, so reads and writes on the detection table wait for the whole build. #1471 measured this for a plain index on a new all-null column of the detection table: about 160 ms on a local copy of production data, and production is larger. That is short, but deploys also queue behind any long-running query on the table. For a non-unique foreign key, the fix in #1471 is db_index=False plus a partial index built with AddIndexConcurrently. A unique index is harder to build concurrently without confusing Django's migration state, so measuring the build with sqlmigrate and a rolled-back transaction on the local copy is probably the right first step before choosing.

"View occurrences" for tracking jobs. The job page's "View occurrences" link (from #1471) matches occurrences whose detections or classifications the job created. Tracking creates neither, so the link opens an empty list for a tracking job until tracking writes algorithm results with its job (#1461) and the filter gains a branch for them, which is described on #1461.

…e scan skips its final detection

The small size filter wrote its gathered rows at the end of the loop body, after the checks that skip a detection with no box or no image size. A skipped final detection therefore jumped past the write, and every classification flagged since the previous batch was lost with no error.

The write now lives in one flush() helper called ahead of the skip checks at each batch boundary and once more after the loop, so the last batch is always written. The batch size, progress reports and stage metrics are unchanged.

… comment on an occurrence

Class masking and the size filter change an occurrence's classifications and determination, but nothing records that a run happened, with which settings, or what it changed. Comments from reviewers have no home at all. This adds the two tables the occurrence history reads.

AlgorithmResult is one row per run and occurrence: the algorithm, the job, a kind (class masking or size filter) and a data column validated against the schema registered for that kind. A new result for the same occurrence, algorithm and kind becomes the current one and the earlier ones stay as history. The determination never reads this table; a run changes a taxon only through the classifications it creates. The project is copied from the occurrence, or from its station when the occurrence has none, so per-project queries need no join. A result for an occurrence with neither is skipped with a warning rather than failing a run that has already changed data.

ValidationReview is one row per thing a person said about an occurrence. Only comments are written for now; the aspect and verdict choices are there for tracking's grouping review to extend. A review can point at the result it answers and can be withdrawn without being deleted.

… and the settings it ran with

Rows written by a pipeline or a post-processing run now name that run: Detection.job and Classification.job are nullable links the pipeline's save_results, class masking and the size filter fill. Rows that already existed keep the job that first wrote them. Classification.algorithm_result is the post-processing result a row was created for, so the occurrence history can show a run with the classifications it produced; the writers fill it in the next commit. All three links clear themselves when the job or result is deleted, so no job becomes undeletable.

The job id is exposed read-only on the detection and classification endpoints, which is what #1156 asked for.

A post-processing job also stores its settings as the task's schema validated them, defaults included, so the job records exactly what the run used.

The three columns have their own migration, separate from the one that creates the result tables, so the lock on the large detection and classification tables is held only for these quick operations.

Closes #1156.

…change, with the batch that changes it

Each occurrence a run re-scores or flags now gets one algorithm result: the settings the run used, the detections it changed, and the determination before and after. The result is written inside the same transaction as the batch that changes the occurrence's classifications and determination, so a batch either lands with its results or not at all. A run that fails mid-way can no longer leave changed data behind with no record of the run.

The result is created by the first batch that touches an occurrence, before that batch inserts its new classifications, so each classification the run creates points at the result through Classification.algorithm_result. Later batches extend the same result with the detections they changed, so an occurrence that spans batches still has exactly one current result. An occurrence with no project, directly or through its station, is re-scored as before but gets no result, with a warning, rather than failing the run after its data has changed.

…dentifiers leave comments

GET /occurrences/{id}/history/ returns everything that happened to an occurrence, newest first: post-processing results, comments, identifications and predictions. A result comes with the classifications its run created, matched through Classification.algorithm_result, or through the run's job for rows written before that link existed. Those classifications are shown inside the result rather than as predictions of their own, so a run and what it changed read as one entry. A prediction that a run demoted names the result that superseded it. The query count is fixed, and the score and logit arrays are never loaded.

The endpoint is visible to whoever can open the occurrence, and it opens an occurrence the project's default filters hide from lists, since the session view links to those too.

POST /occurrences/{id}/reviews/ leaves a comment, for whoever may identify on the project. Comments are the only review written so far.

…'s identification timeline

The Identification tab of an occurrence now reads the history endpoint and shows one list, newest first: a card for each post-processing result (class masking or the size filter), a card for each comment, and the identification and prediction cards as before. Until the history loads, or if it cannot be loaded, the identifications and predictions the occurrence already carries stand in, so the tab never goes blank.

A result card shows the prediction the run made, which can be agreed with, then the determination before and after, the species list or size threshold the run used, how many detections it changed, and a link to the job with the settings it ran with. A prediction a run demoted keeps its own card, labelled as superseded by that run, so a reader can tell why it no longer counts.

…and mark predictions a run outranked

A class masking entry in the occurrence history now carries the species list and the source classifier by name, so the page can say what the run used instead of showing ids. A prediction is marked as superseded not only when a run re-scored it, as class masking does, but also when a run's classification on the same detection outranks it as a terminal prediction, as the size filter does. The label a reader sees is then the same for both methods.

…y name, plain setting labels, one author rule

A result card is now titled by its method ("Class masking", "Size filter") with the classifier and species list named underneath, instead of the long generated algorithm name. The species list row links by name. The remaining job settings are rows with plain labels (capture set, occurrence, re-weighted scores) rather than a line of raw keys, and settings the card already shows, such as the species list, the threshold and the source algorithm, are not repeated.

A prediction a run outranked reads "Superseded by size filter", matching the class masking label. The author of a comment follows the same rule as the identification cards: their display name, else "Anonymous user".

…e value, and drop the review model

A result's data is now a pydantic model per kind that records only what the run alone knew, plus a free-form extra object for whatever else a method or processing service returns. Class masking records the share of the source classifier's probability outside the species list, the original top prediction and its score, and where the new winner ranked before masking, taken from the occurrence's winning detection. The size filter records the detection's size as a fraction of the image, taken from the smallest flagged detection. Both keep the determination before and after. Settings, changed detections and new taxa are no longer copied in; they live on the job, on the linked classifications and on those classifications' taxa.

The headline figure of each kind is repeated in a nullable value column with a partial index on project, kind and value for current rows, so lists can filter and sort on it. The result table migration is rewritten accordingly; the branch is unmerged.

ValidationReview, the comment endpoint and their tests are removed: nothing produces a review yet. They return when tracking's grouping confirmation or a comment box needs them.

A class masking card now reads "Probability outside the list" and "Original top prediction" with its score, and a size filter card reads the detection's size as a share of the image next to the threshold the job ran with. …masking figure plainly

The result model and the per-kind data models now say the rule out loud: the extra object a method or processing service returns is stored, shown and exported only, and a value a feature needs becomes a typed field. The class masking figure is labelled as the share of probability outside the list, on the card and in the code, and the comments say it measures what the list removed rather than being an out-of-distribution score.

A class masking classification names the one it re-scored through applied_to, so
another classifier's prediction on the same detection is no longer labelled as
superseded by class masking. The shared-detection rule stays for the size filter,

- A class masking card whose job no longer names a list says the list is not available.

…when occurrences merge

- AlgorithmResult.kind has no choices; the registry of data models is the list
of kinds, and every write path already rejects a kind without one. Choices
were never enforced by PostgreSQL (the column is a plain varchar either way).
- AlgorithmResult.objects.move_to_occurrence moves the results of merged
occurrences to the kept one, keeping one current result per algorithm and
kind, for tracking and later manual merges.
- record_many locks the affected occurrences in a stable order, so two runs
writing results for one occurrence wait for each other.

…e project from the occurrence only

AlgorithmResult now lives in ami/ml/models/algorithm_result.py (table ml_algorithmresult),
the kind data models and their registry in ami/ml/results/schemas.py (AlgorithmResultData),
and the batch writer in ami/ml/results/writer.py (AlgorithmResultWriter). The results
schemas module is the only one that calls pydantic's API for results and imports nothing
from Django, so a pydantic upgrade touches one file.

A result takes its project from the occurrence. An occurrence without a project is a data
problem tracked on #1188: record_many skips its result with a warning so the run's other
occurrences still get theirs, and save() raises.

Class masking no longer stores the original taxon and score: they are the classification the
masked one replaced (applied_to), which the history reads directly.

Classification.algorithm_result is indexed by a partial index built concurrently in its own
migration, so adding the column holds the table lock only briefly.

…nder its job filter

A post-processing run that records a result without creating a detection or a
classification, such as tracking, matched nothing under ?job=, so the "View occurrences"

…d simplify the history API

Structure:
- Record references move to ami/base/references.py. A model declares its
reference_type and reference_name_field, so the base layer never names an
app's model; reference(), field_references() and field_titles() move with it.
- A job's config as labelled, linked rows moves to ami/jobs/job_config.py
(JobConfigField, job_config_fields), so the jobs panel can reuse it. The word
is "config" throughout, matching params["config"] and config_schema.
- The occurrence history moves from ami/main/models_future to
ami/main/api/occurrence_history.py: it reads ami.ml, which the domain layer
  must not import.
- AlgorithmResult.move_to_occurrence leaves this PR; tracking (#1469) takes it
  over as merge_occurrences.

History API:
- History taxa carry their parents, so every card shows ranks.
- job.config is the list of config fields; the duplicate raw config and
superseded_by_result_id are gone. A demoted prediction shows as intermediate.

Tests: one shared no_query_cache helper replaces three copies; reference and
job config tests sit beside their modules; a test that could not fail and an
admin-configuration test are cut.

… predictions

A result card that has a classification is drawn by the machine prediction
card: the run's best prediction with ranks and Agree, and when expanded, the
runner-up taxa followed by the run's details, its algorithm and its job. The
"Algorithm result" badge becomes a tooltip on the card's icon, and classifier
cards get a "Machine prediction" tooltip. The expand tooltip reads "More
predictions and details".

The result card reuses the occurrence's own prediction record when it has one.
Result kinds and their names are listed once, job config replaces settings,
getUserLabel is used wherever a user name is shown, and the superseded
subtitle is removed.

…ackage, and keep each kind with its task

- Record references: model_reference() declares a schema field that holds a
record id, ModelRef is the resolved {type, id, name}, and
resolve_model_references reads names with one query per type
  (ami/base/model_references.py, ModelRefSerializer in ami/base/serializers.py).
- The occurrence history is a package, ami/main/api/occurrence_history/ with
timeline.py, serializers.py and tests.py, so its serializers leave the
  2,200-line api/serializers.py. ami/main/api gains an __init__.py so the test
  runner discovers the package's tests.
- A result kind's data model lives beside its task's config schema, and the
registry of kinds is built lazily from the tasks' result_models.
- The history API drops fields no client reads: an identification's
  agreed_with_* and a prediction's detection_id and applied_to_id.

The API's record references are EntityRef in the UI (utils/entity-references.ts),
with getEntityRefLabel beside linkFor and an EntityRefValue component in

timeline's cards move from identification-card/ to history/. The history types
drop the fields the API no longer sends.

The history action inherited the list's filter backends, so a list filter in
the query string (such as ?event=) could turn the history into a 404, and the
OpenAPI schema published those filters and called the operation a list. The
action now has no filter backends and is published as a retrieve without them.

Also corrects wording the takeaway review flagged: `extra` is stored and
returned by the API (not exported or shown), the resolver returns a ModelRef,
the index names model_reference(), and the results guide states that a result
belongs to an occurrence, keeping one detection's figures.

Bring the branch up to #1461's current head, which was rebased onto main and
reorganised. The merged tree is #1461's tree plus this branch's own changes;
files left behind by #1461's earlier commits (the old history and references
modules) are dropped.

Tracking follows the new layout: its result data model moves to
ami/ml/post_processing/tracking/results.py and is listed in the task's
result_models; its config uses model_reference; and the tracking card is
ported to the history folder, using EntityRefValue.

AlgorithmResult.objects.move_to_occurrence left #1461, so tracking moves the
results of the occurrences it empties with one update per keeper until a
shared merge_occurrences operation replaces it.

1884-1898: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Use subqueries instead of materialized id lists in find_spanning_ids.

group_images_into_events adds every event of the deployment to touched_event_pks. If any detection in those events has a tracking link, find_spanning_ids loads every capture id of the deployment into Python. It then sends that list back to the database as IN (...) parameters. It does the same with every occurrence id of the deployment. It does this twice: once before taking the locks and once inside the transaction.

On a large station, this produces queries with hundreds of thousands of bound parameters. It also allocates large Python lists inside the regroup path. Nested querysets let PostgreSQL run each step as a single query with no round trip.

The model docstring and the results guide state that occurrences are the
only target today, that detections and captures are expected to become
targets of the same table, and how to keep that open: occurrence-only figures
stay in subclasses such as DeterminationSnapshot, and the target is a column,
never a key in data.

… every linked row

merge_occurrences({absorbed id: kept id}) in ami/main/models_future/occurrence_merges.py folds
whole occurrences into others: it moves their detections, identifications and algorithm results
to the kept occurrence, leaves each user one active identification there, deletes the absorbed
occurrences and recomputes the kept determinations. It refuses, writing nothing, a merge across
projects or sessions, a chain of merges and ids that do not exist. It locks the occurrences in id
order and runs a fixed number of statements however many occurrences merge, and it returns what
it moved so the earlier grouping can be restored.

Each table that links to an occurrence has a rule in MERGE_RULES, and a test fails when a new link
has none, since a link that cascades on delete would otherwise lose its rows in a merge.

Tracking now calls it for the occurrences a run empties, replacing its own identification move,
duplicate withdraw and result move, and the determination refresh is shared. Its recorded result
is unchanged. This replaces AlgorithmResult.objects.move_to_occurrence, which left #1461.

…d insect is not joined

Projects without embedding vectors cannot use the recommended setting, which relies on an
appearance check to keep apart two insects when one leaves and another lands on almost the same
spot. Doubling the overlap term does that job from geometry alone. In a simulation over six
sessions with confirmed occurrences, at captures about 20 seconds apart, it made none of the ten
wrong joins the previous default made (and 2 of 6 later ones, which the recommended setting also
makes). On three full nights it left 0.1% and 0.3% more occurrences than the recommended setting
on the two busier ones, and 7% more (364 against 340) on the quiet one.
The cost cutoff stays at 1.0, so only overlapping boxes can still be linked.

… sessions

A config field can now hold a list of record ids, such as the sessions a
tracking run covers, and each id resolves to its own name and link. A job
config row carries `refs`, one per id in order, in place of a single `ref`.
Sessions become a reference type; their name is computed by Event.name, so
the resolver calls a name method when the name field is not a column.

Also documents that an algorithm result's determination before and after is
a snapshot of the occurrence at run time: later runs change it and merging
occurrences moves the result, so stage evaluation reads the classifications
the stage created instead.

The app's global reset sets lists and list items to `all: unset`, which makes them inline, so the
taxa named by a tracking run ran together on one line ("best: 71.9%Cydia pomonella ..."). A flex
column gives each taxon its own line, as the rest of the card does.

Clarify the require_fresh_event help text.

The setting is reachable from the admin form. With it disabled, tracking can reassign detections to a keeper occurrence while merging existing occurrences. The current text incorrectly says that no detection leaves its occurrence.

…identified occurrences

Tracking used to skip every session in which someone had identified an occurrence. On a copy of
production data that left out about a third of the sessions and most of the detections, because
reviewed sessions are where the detections are. Merging now moves identifications safely, so the
session-level skip is off by default and the run protects identified occurrences directly:

- When a group merges, the occurrence it keeps is the first identified one in capture order, so the
occurrence people identified, and any link to it, survives.
- A link that would join two occurrences whose active identifications name different taxa is not
made, and is not followed when it was stored earlier. Neither person's identification is withdrawn,
which merging them would have done when one user had identified both. A partial overlap (one
occurrence people disagree on, the other naming only one of the taxa) counts as disagreeing.
- The identifications of the planned occurrences are part of the check that a session did not change
between matching and writing, so one saved in between stops the write.
- The job reports how many links were refused for this reason.

The option to skip identified sessions stays, now unchecked by default.

… with its detection

A tracking result listed only the costs of the links its run made. When a run extended a chain from an
earlier run, or joined detections that already shared an occurrence, the list was shorter than the
detections and could not be paired with them by position. `link_costs` now has one entry per detection
in `detection_ids` order: the cost of the link this run made from it, or None when its link is older,
was refused, or it is the last. The planned rewrite of tracking results as one result per detection
(#1412) reads it this way.

…n occurrence only its own

A tracking job's sessions are now declared as session references, so the history resolves them to
named links like the job's other records. A run can cover dozens of sessions, and an occurrence
belongs to one, so its history card lists only the occurrence's own session and leaves the row out
when the job's list does not name it.

…retried

Tracking wrote its results with no check for an earlier attempt of the same job, so a retried job that
found new links on an occurrence it had already recorded wrote a second result for it. The second
attempt's record is now folded into the first: the figures describe the occurrence after the latest
attempt, while each detection keeps the occurrence it was in before the job's first attempt, and the
merges and moved or withdrawn identifications of both attempts are kept, so a reset can still put the
earlier grouping back. A retry that finds nothing new writes nothing, as before.

…eir results along

Merging occurrences moves each absorbed occurrence's results to the kept one, so an occurrence that
tracking merged after class masking ran could show dozens of near-identical masking cards from one run.
A run records one result per occurrence, so the history now groups results of one job, kind and
algorithm into a single entry: the newest result, with every classification the group created and a
count of the results merged in, shown on the card. Results from other runs, and results with no job,
stay entries of their own. This holds until results can name detections (#1412).

…groups merged results

When a run's results from merged occurrences are grouped into one history entry, the entry carries the
newest result's figures and determination. Those come from one arbitrary result of the run and may
describe an absorbed occurrence rather than the kept one, so the card now leaves them out for such an
entry and shows the count of merged results, the classifications the run created, and the run's
settings. The link-cost comment on the tracking result now names refused links too, as the merge
plan's does.

…was squash-merged

#1461 landed on main as one squash commit, so its files reached main with no history link to this
branch's earlier merges of the #1461 branch. Each add/add conflict was resolved by keeping this branch's
side, which is #1461's final version of the file plus #1469's changes: main's copy of every conflicting
file except ami/ml/results/tests.py equals the #1461 head this branch had merged. That test file takes
main's version, which adds the test for #1461's last commit (the read-only results admin). Main's other
changes (#1476, #1420, #1495) merged cleanly.

…urrences that have results

A retried tracking job folds what it adds into the result it wrote earlier for an occurrence. When the
retry merged two occurrences that each held a result from the same job, the merge moved the absorbed
occurrence's result onto the kept one, and only the kept occurrence's own result received the fold. The
kept occurrence was left with two results from one job.

The fold now takes every result the job has on the kept occurrence, including the ones the merge just
moved there. It combines their grouping, link costs and undo records into the result the occurrence
already held, then deletes the others. The determination before the run comes from that result. When
the occurrence held no result of its own, the determination comes from the current attempt.

Timestamps:
- A folded result's updated_at is set, because bulk_update skips auto_now fields.
- merge_occurrences sets updated_at on the occurrences it keeps.
- Tracking sets updated_at on keepers that gained detections without absorbing another occurrence.

A session whose processed captures have no detections is now skipped with a reason. Before, it was
counted as tracked, with zero occurrences before and after.
