Current implementation requires an API key. Codex subscription allows use of custom harness. Supporting this could be beneficial to the community to experiment.
I am happy to add this feature if there is interest.
Yes, I'd take a PR for this. Please use Codex app-server rather than reading the CLI token files directly; it now has managed ChatGPT browser/device-code login and refreshes the tokens itself:
Confirming the gap: as of current main the repo has no Codex integration at all (grep -ri codex → 0 hits), and the LLM backends require api_key (openevolve/config.py:56, resolved at openevolve/config.py:100-101, injected in openevolve/llm/openai.py:63,87-88).
Per @codelion's guidance, I'm working on an opt-in codex_app_server provider that talks to the Codex app-server (managed ChatGPT login + token refresh — no direct reading of CLI token files), keeping the existing API-key path untouched, with a mocked test around the auth boundary and docs. The existing copilot_cli provider is the pattern I'll follow.
Transparency note: this contribution is prepared with AI assistance (an automated coding agent), reviewed and submitted by me.
PR is up: #512 — opt-in codex_app_server provider via the app-server stdio JSON-RPC (auth boundary at account/read, no CLI token-file reads), API-key path untouched. Full suite green (686 passed, 2 pre-existing scipy skips); details and evidence in the PR description.

Keep the current API-key path working and make this opt-in. A mocked test around the auth boundary plus docs would be enough for a first pass.
