Issue being fixed or feature implemented

DashIcon holds every imageset name as an enum raw value, and conventions.sh checks those names against the catalog. Three components built their asset names from strings the checker could not see, typed a second time next to the DashIcon case:

  • NavigationBarElement raw values (navigationbar-back, …)
  • ToastStyle.iconName
  • the iconName: argument of ConverterArrowBadge

A rename in one place would leave the other drawing a blank image, and CI would not notice.

What was done?

  • Components:

    • Toast draws DashIcon.Toast cases. .loading has no icon and keeps the spinner.
    • ConverterArrowBadge takes a DashIcon.Common case.
    • The SheetFeature and NavigationBarCircleIcon previews use DashIcon cases.
  • NavigationBarElement:

    • It keeps its public raw values, so init(rawValue:) still works for hosts.
    • It draws through DashIcon.NavigationBar via an exhaustive switch.
    • It is now CaseIterable, which only adds API. NavigationBarElementTests checks that every raw value names the imageset the element draws.
  • conventions.sh, rule 3, now flags:

    • a package-bundle lookup (Image, UIImage(named:in:), Color, UIColor(named:in:), .custom(_:bundle:), ImageResource / ColorResource(name:bundle:)) whose name is not one literal;
    • a computed name looked up in nil / .main;
    • an empty name;
    • a dashAsset(…) token that is not one literal.

    Icon_DashUI.swift and Color+DashUI.swift are exempt, because they hold the resolvers. Run against master, the rule reports exactly the four call sites this PR fixes. The known limits are listed in the script header.

  • Tests:

    • DashIconTests checks that every DashIcon case resolves in the package bundle on the simulator.
    • conventions-test.sh gets fixtures for the new reports, including absence checks (!needle).
  • Docs: CLAUDE.md, docs/foundation.md, docs/feedback.md, docs/lists-and-rows.md and docs/navigation-and-containers.md now show DashIcon instead of .custom("…"). The stale "toast icons are placeholders" notes are gone.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • swift build (macOS), the iOS Release device build, and xcodebuild test on the iOS 27 simulator: 18 tests, 0 failures.
  • .github/scripts/conventions.sh passes (161 imagesets, 161 colorsets).
  • tests/conventions-test.sh passes all cases, and shellcheck is clean.
  • api-check.sh against master reports no breaking changes.

Before / After

  • No visual change (refactor, tests, docs). Say why in "What was done?".

Every icon resolves to the same imageset as before. Only the way the name is spelled in code changed.

Breaking Changes

None. NavigationBarElement keeps its public raw type and values, and the API check is clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Updated icons used in feature previews, converter badges, and navigation elements to use the library’s bundled icon set.
    • Toasts now use the corresponding bundled icon when available; loading toasts continue to show a spinner, and no-internet toasts display a Wi-Fi icon.
  • Documentation
    • Updated icon and toast examples to reflect the current bundled-icon usage.

The toast, nav bar and converter badge drew their icons from string names
that conventions.sh could not see; they now use DashIcon cases.
NavigationBarElement keeps its public raw values and draws through
DashIcon.NavigationBar; a test keeps the two in step.

conventions.sh flags a package-bundle lookup whose name is not one
literal (outside the Icon_DashUI / Color+DashUI resolvers), a computed
name in the host bundle, an empty name and a computed dashAsset() name.
A unit test checks that every DashIcon case resolves in the package
bundle.

The icon changes have no established rendering regression. The convention scanner has two narrow multiline-handling gaps that can miss an invalid bundle lookup or reject a valid declaration. These are bounded follow-up risks rather than blockers to the UI changes.

Explanation

The title "refactor: route asset names through DashIcon" matches the main change. The PR replaces hand-typed asset-name strings in Toast, ConverterArrowBadge, the navigation bar, previews, and docs with DashIcon cases. It also tightens the conventions.sh asset scanner that enforces this rule. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix. It does not cover the scanner and test changes, which is acceptable for a title.

✅ APPROVE · 7 non-blocking recommendations · no blockers or majors — reviewed at f140c7b944

Level Verdict
1 · Idea ✅ valid Three components typed asset names a second time as strings the catalog check could not see; routing them through DashIcon removes the drift at its source.
2 · Architecture ✅ right layer Library code plus the repo's own convention scanner and a runtime test; nothing a host has to change.
3 · Completeness ✅ complete All string-built names in Sources/ are gone; the only remaining non-literal lookups are the three resolvers (Icon_DashUI.swift, Image+DashUI.swift, Color+DashUI.swift), exempt by design. Previews and docs follow.
4 · Code ✅ clean Rendering parity verified case by case (same imagesets, sizes, modifiers, accessibility flags); script findings below are minor.
7 non-blocking recommendations
  1. Duplicate report for a ternary name in a host bundle —
    else if (k && computed && trim(amask[k]) ~ /^(nil|(Bundle[[:space:]]*)?\.main)$/)
    — Image(flag ? "a" : "b", bundle: .main) prints bundle: .main is not the package bundle twice: once here and once from bundle_ok() after the literal loop. Fire this branch only when no literal was found. (verified by running the script)
  2. Nested literals no longer pinned as "not a name" —
    '!no imageset named "icon-'
    — String(format: "menu-%@", x) and icons["key"] ?? … moved from the pass case into the fail case, which only asserts absence of "icon-. Add !no imageset named "menu- and !no imageset named "key" so a parser change that starts reading nested literals is caught.
  3. !needle is ignored in pass mode — — the needle loop result only matters for fail; a negative needle on a pass case would never be checked. Either check it in both modes or say so in the helper comment.
  4. DashIconTests lists the 14 groups by hand —
    func testEveryCaseResolvesInThePackageBundle() {
    — a new DashIcon group is silently skipped. Rule 1 of conventions.sh covers raw value ↔ imageset statically anyway, so this is a backstop; a comment pointing at Icon_DashUI.swift would make the list's maintenance explicit.
  5. CLAUDE.md promise is wider than the rule —
    `.image`), never a name built at runtime: CI rejects a package-bundle lookup whose name
    — "CI rejects a package-bundle lookup whose name is not one literal" holds only when the bundle is spelled .module / .dashUIKit / #bundle; let b = Bundle.dashUIKit; .custom(name, bundle: b) passes (the script header lists bundle variables as unhandled). Narrow the sentence to match.
  6. NavigationBarElement still spells the names twice —
    var asset: DashIcon.NavigationBar {
    — raw values plus the asset switch, kept in step by a simulator test. Non-breaking for now; for 2.0.0 consider deriving one from the other (e.g. raw value taken from DashIcon.NavigationBar). The new public CaseIterable is additive.
  7. Docs show hosts a string name —
    assets from the package bundle (`Image("menu-send", bundle: .dashUIKit)`; inside the library
    — the Bundle.dashUIKit example uses Image("menu-send", bundle: .dashUIKit); hosts get a compile-checked name from DashIcon.Menu.send.image, which is worth showing there instead.

Pre-existing, not from this PR: the Toast leading icon (

) is not accessibilityHidden, so VoiceOver reads the asset name before the message — ConverterArrowBadge already hides its decorative icon.

Review details Triage: normal (UI library refactor + CI script). Levels 1–3 inline. Level 4: general lane (`/code-review high`) and a UI specialist lane (rendering parity, accessibility, tokens, public API, previews). Verifier: finding 1 reproduced by running `conventions.sh` on the head with a fixture; the remaining items are minor and reported as recommendations. Dropped: a claimed conflicting-conformance risk for hosts that add `CaseIterable` themselves (not a reason to block an additive conformance).

Follow-up to the review of this PR:
- each call's literal names are read once, so a ternary in the host
  bundle or a repeated missing name is reported once;
- a .custom(…) that passes a bundle is a lookup wherever it sits, and a
  computed name in .main / nil / .none is reported;
- an empty name also gets its bundle checked;
- negative needles ("!text") are checked in pass cases too;
- CLAUDE.md, docs/foundation.md and the script header say what the scan
  does and does not follow.

✅ no blockers · no majors · 5 non-blocking recommendations — reviewed at 3171eedddc

Level Verdict
1 · Idea ✅ valid Unchanged since the last review
2 · Architecture ✅ right layer Unchanged
3 · Completeness ✅ complete Docs, CLAUDE.md and the test comment follow the script change
4 · Code ✅ clean The general lane ran conventions-test.sh at this head: all cases pass, the real tree is clean, and the three new cases fail against f140c7b, so they pin the change

Closed since the last review (bot review on f140c7b)

  • A ternary of literals in the host bundle is reported once, not twice.
  • The nested literals ("menu- and "key") are pinned as "not a name" again.
  • !needle is checked in pass mode too.
  • DashIconTests points at Icon_DashUI.swift for new groups.
  • CLAUDE.md now matches the rule, including the host bundle and the call shapes the scan cannot follow.
  • docs/foundation.md shows DashIcon.Menu.send.image instead of a string name.

Still open, as intended: deriving NavigationBarElement raw values from DashIcon (a 2.0.0 change), and the pre-existing Toast icon accessibility point.

5 non-blocking recommendations
  1. Literals from a ternary's condition read as names —
    s = (index(amask[1], "+") ? "" : atop[1]); n = 0; empty = 0
    split("", seen)
    while (match(s, /"([^"\\]|\\.)*"/)) {
    name = substr(s, RSTART + 1, RLENGTH - 2)
    s = substr(s, RSTART + RLENGTH)
    if (name == "") { empty = (trim(amask[1]) == "\"\""); continue }
    if (index(name, "\\") || (name in seen)) continue
    seen[name] = 1; names[++n] = name
    }
    — the names loop takes every quoted token in the first argument, including a comparison operand. .custom(style == "filled" ? a : b, bundle: .module) now also reports no imageset named "filled", next to the correct "not one literal". Image(kind == "dark" ? a : b, bundle: .main) loses the computed-name report, because the bogus name sets n. Reading only the literals after ? / :, or none when the argument has ==, would avoid it. (reproduced with a fixture)
  2. Any .custom(…, bundle:) counts as DashIconSource.custom —
    # Other enums have a .custom case too: its literals are read as names only
    # where a DashIconSource is expected (after `DashIconSource`, `dash:` or
    # an `…icon:` / `…Icon:` label) or when it passes a bundle, which in this
    # package only DashIconSource.custom does.
    context = (call !~ /custom/ || arg("bundle") || before ~ /(DashIconSource[[:space:]]*=?|(dash|[A-Za-z]*[Ii]con):)[[:space:]]*$/)
    — the receiver is not checked; the only guard is the comment. x.custom(flag ? "q" : "r", bundle: .main) on another type gets catalog errors that make no sense. Nothing in the package does this today. (reproduced with a fixture)
  3. CLAUDE.md, "a bundle in a variable" —

    DashUIKit/CLAUDE.md

    Lines 60 to 64 in 3171eed

    `.image`), never a name built at runtime: CI rejects a lookup in `.dashUIKit` /
    `.module` whose name is not one literal, and a lookup in the host bundle (`.main`,
    `nil`, `.none`). It is a text scan: the call shapes it cannot follow (a bundle in a
    variable, `.custom(name)` with no bundle and no `dash:` / `icon:` label, …) are listed
    in the script header.
    — this limit applies to computed names only. A literal name with a bundle in a variable (.custom("menu-send", bundle: hostBundle)) is rejected, so a reader may expect it to pass.
  4. Duplicates removed per call, not per line — two calls on one line with the same defect (Image(a, bundle: .main); Image(b, bundle: .main)) still print the same file:line: message twice. A sort -u on the report output would remove this class of duplicate for every rule, without the per-call seen / !(context && n) coupling.
  5. The DashIconTests group list stays manual —
    /// One line per group in `Foundation/Icon_DashUI.swift`: add a new group here.
    — the comment helps. Rule 1 of conventions.sh already parses every DashIconAsset enum, so it could also check that each one has an assertResolves line.
Review details

Re-review of the bot review on f140c7b; the new diff is 3171eed, script and tests only. Levels 1–3 re-checked inline. Level 4 used the general lane (/code-review high), which ran the test suite at this head and against the old script, plus probe fixtures for items 1, 2 and 4. Dropped: a cleanup to compute context before the names loop (arg("bundle") repeats what k already holds), which has no wrong result.

At the time of this review, Conventions, Lint CI config and Before / After screenshots were still pending on GitHub, about 40 minutes after the push. That looks like runner queueing, not a failure.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add a fixture for a split no-bundle .custom( call.

The convention test suite has no fixture for a .custom( call without a bundle: argument when the call starts on its own line and the type or dash: label is on the previous line. The current scanner also does not handle that form, so the missing fixture hides a detection gap.

The scanner decides .custom context from the text before the call on the same line. A call on its own line has no DashIconSource or dash: text before it, so the scanner skips it. The if (!context) continue branch runs before the host-bundle report, so no diagnostic is produced.

Add a fixture such as let e = Image(dash: followed by .custom("Badge")), and expect the host-bundle diagnostic. This test fails until the scanner reads context across the line break. Fix the scanner together with the fixture, or the test suite fails.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Handle a func keyword on the previous line in the dashAsset declaration check.

The guard in tokens() only skips a dashAsset declaration when func appears earlier on the same physical line. Swift accepts a line break between func and the function name. A declaration laid out that way is treated as a token call. The script then reports dashAsset(…) needs one literal colorset name, and the convention gate exits 1. The current Color+DashUI.swift keeps the declaration on one line, so this affects only a future source layout.

27-27: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Assert the source each element draws, not only its raw value.

testRawValueNamesTheDrawnImageset compares rawValue with asset.assetName only. It does not read icon or source. icon draws back, close and plus through NavigationBarCircleIconContent(source: source), and draws info through Image(dash: source). If source returned a different valid imageset or bundle, no current test would fail. DashIconTests.testEveryCaseResolvesInThePackageBundle checks only that each case resolves to an image, so it would also pass.

Today the paths match because source returns asset.source. A test can lock that in. DashIconSource has no Equatable or Hashable conformance, so XCTAssertEqual(element.source, element.asset.source) cannot compile. Assert the enum case and its fields instead. This requires making source reachable from tests:

A .custom( on the line after `Image(dash:` was not checked, and a `func` on
the line before `dashAsset(` made its declaration read as a token. When a
.custom( or dashAsset( call starts its line, the last line with code before
it (past blank, comment and #if / #endif lines) now counts as its context.

@coderabbitai Thanks. Both minors are fixed in a1d6b94:

  • Split .custom( call. When a .custom( starts its line, the last line with code before it (past blank, comment and #if / #endif lines) now counts as its context. Image(dash: followed by .custom("…") on the next line is checked, and so are leadingIcon: and DashIconSource =. Fixtures cover these shapes and a comment line in between.
  • func on the line before dashAsset(. The same look-back applies there, so a declaration split after func is skipped. A fixture covers it, and another checks that a token on the line after static let … = is still read.

A label-like case .icon: or icon: dictionary key on that line also counts as context. That makes CI fail loudly rather than miss a lookup, and the script header lists it with the other limits.

@romchornyi Thanks. I inspected a1d6b94. The changes address both minor findings:

  • Split .custom( calls now use the preceding code line as context.
  • Split dashAsset( declarations are skipped, while calls after static let … = remain checked.

The fixtures cover these cases. The header also documents the label-like context limit.

This was a source inspection only. I did not run the tests.
