I'm a technology leader with roots in Linux, networking and getting things to work. I'm SVP of Workflow Engineering at Pax8 and founder of 1310, an independent ISP.
At work, I focus on making AI and automation useful in the everyday running of a business. At home, I put radios on the bins so Home Assistant can tell whether I've taken them out. Both involve rather more testing than you might initially expect.
-
BinRange
Ultra-wideband radio tags, custom firmware and Home Assistant, all to answer “have you put the bins out?” A fairly substantial solution to a small domestic problem. -
Open Observatory
A Raspberry Pi acoustic observatory for listening to wildlife in the garden. Started with wanting the bird identification app to keep listening after I'd put my phone away. -
Sage Coffee
A Home Assistant integration for connected Sage/Breville coffee machines. Power control, temperatures and machine state, alongside the rest of the house. -
Kotoba
Japanese vocabulary flashcards for TRMNL, built for my wife. A small project that gets used every day, which is a particularly satisfying outcome.
Reliable infrastructure, home automation, embedded hardware, radio, and understanding how things actually work. I'm also enjoying how much faster AI lets me turn an idea into something I can try, break and improve.
Away from a screen, you'll often find me in the woods.
I write about the projects, the things I've learnt, and my work with technology at sjg.io.
