feat(sandbox): add policy-gated install_packages tool with package-spec validation - #830
Implements the package-install part of the sandbox extended-permissions design (#692). Profiles can now permit install_packages, per ecosystem, through policy.package_install. Every request goes through a new SandboxPermissionGuard and a hardened PackageInstaller before it reaches a provider. The PR also adds a policy.languages allowlist for run_code and replaces the providers' interpreter-name pkill with a marker-based process kill.
Installs are denied by default. A profile without policy.package_install behaves as it did before this PR.
Targets feature/692-sandbox-install-package, not develop.
Type of Change
Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
policy.package_install (ecosystems, default ["python"], plus an optional install timeout) and policy.languages (omitted = whatever the provider declares; [] = command-only profile). Both are carried on the SandboxPolicy wire model through the new PackageInstallPolicy.
New _SandboxProviderPackageConfig base for the docker, kubernetes, e2b and daytona blocks, with two fields:
package_installers: ecosystem → argv prefix; the default is python: [pip, install].
package_rules: ecosystem → dotted path to a bring-your-own PackageSpecRule.
package_install is rejected on environment: attached profiles.
SandboxPolicy.effective_timeout(op): installs use package_install.timeout when it is set. The queue broker's worker_timeout_ceiling check now uses this effective timeout.
Permission guard (sandbox/permission.py)
SandboxPermissionGuard makes the "not permitted" decision from the request alone, without reading AKConfig or provider capabilities. That way a queue worker enforces exactly the policy the agent resolved.
It runs authoritatively in BrokerWorkerCore, and also agent-side in ExecutionManager before submit. The agent-side check runs before session resolution, so a denied or malformed request cannot tear down an idle-expired sandbox.
Each denial raises the new SandboxPermissionDeniedError (a SandboxPolicyError subclass) and logs exactly one audit WARNING. The log names the operation, profile, agent and session, and never the code or the specs.
Package-spec validation (sandbox/packages.py)
PackageInstaller builds the installer argv, or a shlex.joined command for SDKs that only take a string. The checks run in two stages:
A fixed baseline that no rule can loosen. It rejects non-list input, empty entries, a leading - (installer options), NUL, whitespace, URLs and local paths.
The ecosystem's rule chain.
Built-in rules:
PythonPackageSpecRule accepts registry specs with extras and version specifiers. It rejects git+, / and every pip archive suffix.
NodePackageSpecRule accepts name / @scope/name, each with an optional @version or range. It rejects protocol specs, tarballs and user/repo shorthand.
Bring-your-own PackageSpecRules run after the built-in rule, so they can only narrow what an ecosystem accepts.
Error messages give the entry's index and the rule it broke, never the entry text.
PackageSpecRuleFactory.validate_config resolves every rule at startup, in get_sandbox_tools and in QueueBrokerWorker. An unresolvable rule fails fast.
Providers
Sandbox.install_packages(packages, ecosystem="python", timeout=None). An ecosystem the instance does not declare raises SandboxCapabilityError("package_ecosystem:<e>").
SandboxCapabilities.package_ecosystems is the source of truth, and package_install is derived from it. The new derive() re-validates instance-level capability overrides, which model_copy did not.
Each provider instance declares its ecosystems from its package_installers keys. Handles now check against the instance's capabilities instead of the class's, and ec2_ssm gets the same instance-capabilities change.
Installs now run under the effective timeout. Before this PR, docker and kubernetes installs had no timeout. Daytona now rounds timeouts up with ceil instead of truncating them.
ProcessKiller tags each docker/kubernetes exec with a unique AK_EXEC_ID marker. Kubernetes gets the marker through a launcher wrapper, because its stream API has no per-exec environment.
On timeout or cancellation, only processes that carry that exec's marker are SIGKILLed. Background processes started by earlier execs survive.
The kill is a /proc scan, so it works on python:3.12-slim, which ships without pkill or ps. It skips PID 1, is time-bounded (5s), and is disabled for attach_to containers and pods that the framework does not own.
BrokerWorkerCore passes the operation's timeout to the handle. The worker's wait_for is now a backstop that fires BACKSTOP_GRACE_SECONDS (10s) later.
Agent tools and warnings
The new install_packages system tool is registered only when at least one profile permits installs.
The agent guidance lists each profile's languages and install permissions. It also tells the model not to work around a "not permitted" result with run_command / run_code.
Startup warnings:
Once per profile: installs combined with scope: per_runtime, with network_egress: deny, or with a docker/kubernetes filesystem policy (the root filesystem is read-only).
Once per (provider, profile): a policy that permits an ecosystem or language the provider does not declare.
Specs
Adds spec.md and plan.md under docs/specs/692-sandbox-extended-permissions/, and updates design.md with the full archive and tarball suffix lists.
Testing
Unit tests pass locally (sandbox suite: 422 passed, 1 skipped as crewai is not installed)
test_sandbox_permissions.py: guard, agent-side pre-submit checks, audit logging, the legacy-override shim, timeouts and the backstop, warnings, tool registration.
test_sandbox_providers.py: per-instance ecosystems, installer argv and command, marker kill on docker and kubernetes, attach_to with the kill disabled.
SandboxProviderContract now asserts that an undeclared ecosystem raises SandboxCapabilityError and is never run as pip.

Additional Notes
Deprecation: a BYO Sandbox that overrides install_packages(packages) without ecosystem / timeout still works, with a warning. The warning says this form will stop working in the next minor release.
node installs are opt-in. The operator has to declare e.g. node: [npm, install] in package_installers, because only the image decides whether npm exists.
User-facing docs (ak-py docs, the docs site, skills) are not updated in this PR. Only the spec documents are.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an install_packages sandbox tool for profiles that permit package installation, with configurable installers for supported ecosystems.
Added profile controls for permitted code languages and package ecosystems, plus configurable installation timeouts.
Bug Fixes
Package permissions and effective timeouts are now enforced consistently across sandbox providers and execution brokers.
Improved best-effort process cleanup after timeouts or cancellation for sandboxes managed by the framework.
Documentation
Updated sandbox examples to clarify that package installation is denied by default and must be enabled in a profile.
This change adds profile-level language and package-install permissions, package-spec validation, and installer support across sandbox providers. It also updates broker timeout and denial handling, adds managed-process termination for Docker and Kubernetes execs, and exposes a conditional package-install tool.
Sandbox policies now accept language and package-install restrictions. Provider configuration supplies installer commands and package rules. The installer validates baseline input and applies Python, Node, or configured rules.
The manager checks permissions and package input before session resolution. Brokers handle permission denials separately, use operation-specific timeouts, and validate package rules at startup. The install tool appears only when a profile allows installs.

The specification and plan record permission, package validation, provider, and rollout details. The examples document opt-in package-install policies and Python ecosystem settings.
Package-spec validation for Node can be bypassed with a leading-dot version suffix, which may install a local directory. During mixed-version rollouts, a non-Python install may also run as a pip install on an old worker. Fix the Node grammar and make the rollout compatibility explicit or enforced before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 73402
The new permissions narrow existing execution authority, but a confirmed Node package-spec gap weakens the registry-only restriction. Exploitation requires an enabled Node installer and affects the selected environment within its existing privileges. Deployment sequencing is also important; no broader privilege escalation was established.
Retained concerns
Low · security · observed: The new Node installation path does not fully enforce its registry-only source invariant. The grammar accepts a leading-dot suffix such as pkg@., while baseline path rejection examines only the beginning of the complete entry. npm can therefore resolve an accepted request as a local directory rather than a registry package. This affects explicitly enabled Node installers and the target sandbox’s package state; it does not establish host escape or additional execution privileges.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The retained finding requires access to a profile permitting Node installation and a configured Node installer. Each request affects its resolved sandbox; repeated requests can affect other accessible Node-enabled targets. Exposure inherits those environments’ filesystem, credentials, and network authority. The evidence does not establish cross-tenant access, host escape, or infrastructure privilege escalation.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained static trace identifies a package-source validation bypass: an attacker-controlled Node specification can place local-directory syntax after the name separator, pass the whole-entry baseline and Node grammar, and reach installer dispatch. This weakens the newly introduced registry-only contract, not the ecosystem permission gate. Proper argv construction does not prevent npm from interpreting the accepted argument as a local source.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The permission lists gate named operations, not all equivalent actions. Shell commands remain capable of invoking interpreters or installers, and the specification explicitly identifies this limitation. Shell execution existed at the base, so it is not treated as a newly introduced bypass or expansion of authority.
observed — The worker guarantees baseline package checks for every override, but ecosystem-specific validation remains a provider responsibility for custom implementations. The normal manager path validates configured built-in rules before submission. Queue requests already carried authoritative execution fields at the base; production producer authorization and custom-provider conformance remain unresolved deployment assumptions rather than demonstrated new vulnerabilities.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The inspected path serializes execution per session but does not make installation transactional or exactly-once. A nonzero installer result can leave package-manager changes in a reusable session, and queue redelivery can repeat an installation. Best-effort process cleanup also permits descendants that clear their marker to survive. These limits matter when later executions rely on the resulting environment; they are not evidence of an additional verified vulnerability.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Validate Node specifications by their resolved source type and reject file or directory sources, including syntax embedded after the package-name separator. This would align validation with the installer’s interpretation rather than relying exclusively on a permissive version-suffix grammar.
